"The Freebies"
(An Actor’s Perspective on Postmodern
Music Genres and when they’re mixed)
As of this writing, many of you might have watched
our short film. And yes, I am that actor. Full name: Sergio Miguel A. Villena
but just call me Migs. Through the years, music has been so much a part of my
life that it involves almost everything in me. Anywhere I go, every guitar I
see is most of the time borrowed and played.
Here comes this study in which we
see postmodern music giants: Emo, Rock and Hip-Hop exist and make a statement
for themselves. And for some reason, we also like to see how and what they look
like, mixed. I’ve tried every single one of them and frankly, I think what this
causes is a divide in music.
Back then I was in 6th grade, I was really
into Eminem, 50 Cent, Ludacris and the like. Yes, I was one of them swags
wearing loose clothes, Bling Bling, Caps, and the Street Talk. Come high
school, Emo was becoming more of a fashion (then lousily just became another
fad in which most people getting into that style are called fags or gays). Much
as I wanted to be one, I didn’t style my hair long until I was in 3rd
year. And on that same year sparked news that a girl I liked already had a
girlfriend. It was the first hurt that I tried to get over which eventually I
did but most of the time, I was really down and listening to emo music. It was
a good thing I didn’t force myself into suicide nor a suicidal attempt but
damn, it was depressing. Once in a while I become emo when I’m rejected but I
won’t remain one forever. Going to Rock Music, this is something that’s almost
forever in my ears. It was a thing I love hearing more often and even more than
the other two major genres on this study. It is one of the biggest reasons why
I play guitar.
That’s my take on each
of them. It’s obvious that they are of different ways in terms of lyrics,
melody, rhythms, and emotion but what if there was a time they were mixed? It
could happen for sure. Some would delight and follow yet the others would just diss
and even insult it. These mixed genres were coined in different terms like
“Emophizta” combining Emo, Rock and Hip Hop altogether and frankly that term
makes my ears bleed and then another term called “Bolokz” a more proper term
coined by the Rockers. They would coin this to someone who loves to mix genres
referring to them as society’s scum, “baduy” or “bulok”. My take on
“Emophizta”, it’s a corny term. My take on “Bolokz”, it’s basically
discrimination. Trust me. I’ve been there. I’ve been called such a term for
loving both Rock and Hip Hop back in High School. It causes a stupid divide and
brings division to the lovers of music. Music should unite and not divide. It
should be a reason why people can express. It shouldn’t become a force divided
to take on each other. Now, classifying myself on these categories, I’m
neither. I am a mass musician. I play what I want to play and as a Christian,
more often what God wants me to play. But it’s still your take on who you want
yourself to be. No one can’t stop you whether you go blinging in Hip Hop,
depress yourself in Emo, bang your head in Rock or mix all of them.
