What genre of music do you prefer listening? Hip hop, emo and rock come along the way. They have done a big name in the industry of music. And I prefer to indicate them in this article as its main topic. In this article, you will know their differences as well as their history through these genres of music.
Hip hop is a lifestyle with its own lingo, dress code, etc., in the words of KRS-one, “hip hop is something you live”. This is also a dance style, usually danced to hip hop music that evolved from the hip hop culture. The first dance associated with hip hop was break dancing. While break dancing consists primarily of moves executed close to the ground, the majority of hip hop moves are done standing up.
According to A Brief History of Hip-Hop and Rap by Henry Adaso, it came about because of some major format changes which took place within Black radio during the early 79’s. Black radio stations play a vital role in the community. It reflects the customs, traditions in the community. This serves as an entertainment particularly to the young people.
The next genre is Rock (rock and roll!). It became popular during the 1950’s in America and Europe. African American performers originated this based on older musical styles with a heavy focus on guitar, drums and powerful vocals. To name one of the most famous and earliest performers in the early days of rock music, that is Elvis Presley. And during the 1960’s, there came another hugely successful and popular rock music group, “The Beatles” they inspired by rhythm and blue songs. In the Philippines, we have our pride when it comes to pop/rock music, Arnel Pineda, the lead singer of the Journey band. Journey burst onto the music scene in the late 1970’s and early 80 are, ruling the pop/rock scene with a lethal combination of catchy melodies, sugar coated a lyric that seems to have the unique angst of their music. I really appreciate their passion as they rock the world.
Rock music has also led the way for other music forms, such as heavy metal which features extreme guitar sound and heavy distortion. Rock music has branched out into wide variety of songs such as Folk music, for example is Bob Dylans’ music which featured acoustic guitars and socially conscious lyrics, many with anti-war sentiments. On the other hand is the Psychedelic rock music which is often dissonant music. While the Progressive rock are experimented with a wide range of instruments.
Emo, the other genre of music in the 1980’s. It’s an anarchic and energetic form of, music provided an alternative to disco heavily produced pop music. While in the mid 80’s, many of the hard core bands had disbanded or changed directions musically. This genre o0f music is derived from anarchic punk sound, it is said to be short for “emo core”, an emotionally charged form of soft core punk which started in the Washington D.C
Culture thru music makes people from diverse places to be united. Whether rich or poor, the hip hop, rock and culture remains to be a huge part of everyone’s lives. Though these have been misinterpreted because of the way they look, the kind of music they’re pertaining to, these genres had a wide range of musical forms.
